Karen Van Leuven & Robert Bradsby

The masterminds behind The Sound Room and everything that makes this place amazing. Karen is a long time healthcare professional, working in a variety of fields for 30+ years, she is the real boss. Robert is an architect, who has worked on many interesting projects, including helping to design the first Apple stores. Together they have nurtured The Sound Room from a house concert series in their living room to an ongoing living jazz project. They can be found at every show working the bar, serving food, or taking care of their guests.

Carey Williams

The greeter, meeter and seater, don’t mess with the furniture police. Also handling the sound engineering as well as the live video streaming to our Facebook page, Carey manages the house like a Casino pit boss, but with more tenderness and care.

Scott Bradsby

Scott is part of our food and drink operations. You can often find him in the kitchen or at the bar serving drinks. Since he came onboard full time in 2017, we have worked to build and improve upon our food and drink offerings. Look for more out of Scott and his team as we open our new space in the coming months.

Erik has been an integral part of our growth over the years. While he only recently became a full time member of our team, Erik has been cooking at our events for years. He has been a huge contributor to the success of our Second Saturday Salon series, bringing his culinary talents into our space for everyone to enjoy. Stay tuned for more delicious food from Chef Erik coming very soon.

We are a homegrown, organic, non-profit dedicated to promoting jazz as an art form.

The Sound Room is aptly named. The focus is on the sound or the music. Unlike clubs where the performance may be peripheral to the experience, at the Sound Room the performance is the experience.  We are an all-ages listening room. We exist to present great music and promote jazz as an art form.

Our ticket proceeds pay for the band and sound equipment. Our food & drink revenue pays the rent and utilities. We volunteer our time to make this program run. We serve beer, wine and a great collection of inventive non-alcoholic drinks.

The Sound Room was selected by DownBeat Magazine as 1 of the best places to hear jazz in the World 4 years in a row!

The Sound Room was also featured in the New York Times 36 hours in Oakland and in the Wall Street Journal One of a Kind Experiences in Oakland. We have been named the Best Live Music Venue in the Bay Area for 2023. We are actively looking for financial support for our ongoing music programs. Donate to the cause at Keep Jazz Alive at the Sound Room.

We are an intimate jazz venue. We recommend advance purchase of tickets to ensure seating.

We are located at 3022 Broadway, Oakland - directly across from Sprouts.
